Digital Public History

During my MA, I took a Digital Public History class in which each student recorded a podcast we put them together to make a channel. Our channel, Shared Authority, is hosted on SoundCloud. Inspired by current debates surrounding the legalization of marijuana and the LCBO's bid for a license to be a legal dispensary, I chose to produce a podcast on how the temperance and prohibition movements in Canada led to the creation of the LCBO in Ontario.

Still a work-in-progress, Stanley Harpham Goes to War is an online exhibition that follows the story of a young man from Nottinghamshire, England who follows his two older brothers and immigrates to Canada. Stanley arrives in Toronto in January 1913 only to join the Canadian Forces in the First World War three years later. Throughout his time in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Stanley wrote many letters home, many of which are featured in the exhibit. Surviving the war, Stanley returned to Toronto in May 1919 and opens what would become a highly successful business with his two brothers, Cecil and Horace.

This exhibition was created using Omeka.

collaborative effort by the MA Public History students at the University of Western Ontario to create a Walking Tour within Downtown London, Ontario based on a micro history from London's past. The theme of our walking tour was the Curse of Peg-Leg Brown, a wooden-legged vagrant from the United States who stirred up trouble as soon as he landed in London.

The audio for the Walking Tour was researched and written by the MA Public History students of 2018-2019 and recorded by Sean Campbell using Audacity. The audio is hosted on Amazon Connect
