Exhibition Techniques

Shadow Box

Using a variety of exhibition techniques, I created a Shadow Box as a gift for my father's retirement from teaching. The frame of the box was constructed from MDF while the backing is a vinyl graphic mounted on 1/4" gatorfoam. The front of the box is sealed with a piece of glass held in grooves cut into the MDF frame. Each piece of the frame has been joined at the corners with finger joints and glue.

The vinyl graphic was created using Adobe Illustrator, as was the sign vinyl lettering that appears on the front of the glass and on the top of the frame. The MDF frame has been painted using chalkboard paint in recognition of the recipient being a teacher.

Full dimensions of the Shadow Box:

Dry Mounting
Dry Mounting

The image has been dry mounted onto a 10" x 16" piece of masonite using dry mount tissue and a heat press. A frame was constructed out of pine (1 1/2" smaller than the masonite on all sides) to assist in the hanging of the image and the frame and the sides of the masonite board were painted black. The image was originally from a calendar, printed on a glossy paperstock.

As this was done as a student project in the AMS program, some of us students who were living away from home did not have anything in particular that we wanted to drymount. We decided to buy the Vancouver Firefighters Hall of Flame calendar so at least the proceeds would go to the Vancouver Fighterfighter Charities.

Object Mount

Metal mount for a perfume bottle manufactured out of pine (base) and a brass rod support frame. The brass support frame is comprised of three separate pieces that have been brazed together and the bottom of the support was threaded and is held in the base with a washer and nut. Once brazed, the brass rod was spray painted gold. The pine base has a decorative edge cut with a router and has been stained. The perfume bottle is buffered from the metal support using microsuede and is held in place with fishing line tied around the neck of the bottle.
